Kaneto Shindô was born on 22 April 1912 in Hiroshima, Japan. He was a writer and director, known for Ichimai no hagaki (2010), Hadaka no shima (1960) and Gogo no Yuigon-jo (1995). He was married to Nobuko Otowa and Miyo Shindo. He died on 29 May 2012 in Hiroshima, Japan.

He was the second oldest active film-maker in the world and the oldest film director in Japan.
