A 1905 graduate of the College of Charleston, Herbert Ravenel Sass was an old school Southern gentleman - historian, novelist, short story writer, amateur ornithologist, naturalist, artist and poet. He published a number of books touching on Charleston's history as well as on the local flora and fauna, and, for almost fifty years, published numerous articles on topics as varied as birds, the American Civil War, and race relations.
