THE GIFT combines a romantic tragedy and an experiment in modern technology. It fuses 35mm footage from an unreleased film called AT RISK with new footage shot on HD (using both the Sony HDW-F900 and the Canon XL-H1). The unreleased film is a cautionary tale about infidelity and the spread of HIV. Its observations, fears and anxiety reflect the general hysteria of its time. The new material brings a modern perspective, the effects of the disease as its passed through new generations, and a storyline that infuses lyricism and melodrama.

Set four years after the Portuguese revolution and the simultaneous loss of the Portuguese empire in Africa, the story concerns a director who sells guns to finance his play.

Kelly, retired baseball player, brings his daughter Pat to Centerville to live. She meets Steve who lives on a farm with his Uncle Matt and Aunt Martha. Uncle Matt does not approve of school and refuses permission for Steve to attend the school dance. Aunt Martha helps sneak Steve out but Uncle Matt shows up at the dance and drags the humiliated Steve away.

Chloride, Arizona, Larry Dagger, forty years old, is an unemployed, ex demolition derby pilot, trying to support his wife and two children. Driving home one night, he saves a man, Johnny, who is Christlike in appearance and that he finds lying naked and wounded in the road. Vera, Larry's wife, stitches, cleans his wounds. With no money, Johnny accepts to stay with the Daggers, convinces Larry to get back into derbying. Larry becomes obsessed with the idea of building a car for the next derby and Johnny starts having an affair with Vera. This stranger's arrival in the Daggers home will change their lives forever.
