A drifter stranded in Kansas accepts a job offer from a wheat harvester who, in desperation over his cancer and financial woes, attempts suicide but becomes a father-figure to the young man.

Leda Beth Vincent (Raquel Welch) lives in the small town of Shiloh, where she works as a cocktail waitress. Nobody in town--least of all Julie--wants to support her, and it looks like she needs to bring the Board of Education to court. The trouble is that a trampy school dropout counts for little compared to the holders of knowledge and morality.
