Overcoming his addiction to drink, John Fairmeadow leaves the Bowery for a western logging camp posing as a minister. His fistic ability and his gentle manner reform the town drinkers and put the saloon out of business. Meanwhile, John also protects pretty orphan Pattie Batch from the attentions of Jack Flack; Flack is killed by saloon keeper Pale Peter after the body of his wife, Clare, who was betrayed by Flack, is discovered in the river; and John is united to Pattie.

After receiving word of his partner Clara's passing, Roger travels to the desolate family cabin where they would often vacation together. As he pours over the home videos recorded during their trips, Roger begins to realize that someone has been watching them from the woods for years.

Cyrus Braidwood has a secret. His daughter Helen isn't actually his daughter--her father is a murderer, and Braidwood has been raising her as his own because he has her father's written confession hidden. One day her father manages to get ahold of the confession. Helen shows up at his apartment looking for it, which culminates in her and a young man she meets there being taken prisoner by a criminal gang.

Blanca, the director of the Municipal Library of a Spanish provincial city, receives a letter from Antonio Gómez, a partner she does not remember, in which he confesses his passionate love, alluding to the relationship between his secret feelings and the terrible crime that he just committed in a tavern shooting, in cold blood, on four customers who drank quietly at the bar. The whole city talks about the murder and, although the murderer is unaccounted for, Blanca has the feeling that he appears in her reveries.
