Summary The self-confident beauty Irina, leaving her botanist husband Sergey for her poet lover Igor, decides "out of the kindness of her heart" to place her homeless, unadapted husband in good hands - and gives him to her neighbor, "an old maid" and "a black sheep", teacher Lida. Irina's actions offend Sergey and Lida so much that they decide to act like an "ideal couple" out of spite. Living together and "friendship" against Ira bring Sergey and Lida closer together.
