A young Marine Veteran finds himself in a world that is unrecognizable to him.

In order to pacify a reporter angry at being refused a good seat to see "The Savage," a popular sideshow act, two circus men, Larkey and Kerry, relate the savage's story: Larkey, Kerry and another, shipwrecked on a South Atlantic island, discover a tribe who speak old English and are descended from a colony founded by Sir Walter Raleigh. Beautiful Minnie Lee escapes from the stocks and discovers Kerry, then a minister, who shines an electric light on her. Thinking that he is a god, she falls in love, although he refuses her advances. Larkey, searching for strange animals for the circus, leaves with Minnie. Later, when the circus comes to Kerry's town, Minnie, now The Savage, scratches Larkey until he releases her. She enters Kerry's home, where she shocks his church members by appearing scantily dressed and, without Kerry's knowledge, sleeping next to him. Dismissed as pastor, Kerry realizes he loves Minnie and returns to the circus with her. The reporter later questions Minnie and learns that the preceding tale was not true.

Lieutenant Bob Warburton is wounded during an encounter with the Indians and taken to the home of Col. Annesley for medical treatment. Recovering, Bob finds that his service in the army has expired and he says he is penniless. However he is rich in romance and becomes fascinated by the Colonel's daughter, Betty. Betty, not knowing who Bob is, offers him a position as coachman, which he accepts. Many and varied are Bob's experiences as "The Man on the Box" of the Annesley coach. Becoming implicated in a plot to defraud the United States Government of important plans, he thwarts the attempts of a Russian Count and saves important plans. Betty, while visiting Bob's sister, who is a dear friend, learns from Bob's photograph who he is, but allows him to continue as coachman. Bob is entirely ignorant of Betty's knowledge of his identity. Betty's father loses his money, then Bob discloses his identity and admits he is the possessor of a large fortune in his own right. However, Betty's and Bob's romance is one of pure love and, after a series of intrigues, plots and counter-plots, all of which "The Man on the Box" foils, the couple are married and live happily ever after.

Johnny Bromley, a rich young idler, goaded by the sneering laughter of Dot, a vamp, and by his father's open contempt, retires to a prizefighters' training camp for rehabilitation. There he meets Jenny Killian, daughter of the camp owner, and with her encouragement and love he overcomes the unpleasant memories of Dot's accusations of cowardice. When at last he is a success, he wins the hand of Jenny in marriage and his parent's forgiveness; upon meeting his former rival (The Broker) with Dot, he surprises him with a swift punch in the jaw.
