Series premiere. The Yi family is busy putting together a double celebration - the family business Xinghua Department Store's 10th anniversary, which falls on the same day as owner Yi Xinghua's birthday. The Yi sisters, Zhongling, Zhongyu and Zhongxiu, prepare grand birthday gifts to impress their father. The three sisters are step-siblings born to the same father and three different mothers. At the joyous event, Xinghua announces his resolve to promote Made in China products. Xinghua looks past his employee Liu Jingan's betrayal, he decides to invest in Jingan's new department store. Unhappy about her father's remarriage, Zhongyu is rude to her stepmother Huang Yingru and Xinghua. Meanwhile, Zhongling's husband Xi Weian rectifies his father-in-law's issues regarding government bonds.

Later, Zhongling reveals that Zhongyu endured a miserable childhood because of their father's affair. A wealthy family's scion, Lu Pei scatters money onto the streets to divert people away, so as to clear the road for the Yi family's car. Weian recounts how he fell in love with Zhongling at first sight. Jiyu gets upset upon overhearing his confession because she harbours feelings for Weian. Xinghua wants to matchmake Zhongxiu to Tang Fengwu, a learned diplomat from an illustrious family. Zhongxiu's blind date turns out to be the man who saved Zhongyu.

Zhongyu displays her natural business acumen when given the opportunity to organise the company ball. At the party, Zhongyu seizes the opportunity to dance with Fengwu. But Zhongyu ends up leaving in a huff because of a misunderstanding. Xinghua invites Fengwu to stay at their home, where Fengwu develops a crush on Zhongxiu. Xinghua attracts trouble for refusing the Kuomintang government's orders to disband the Chamber of Commerce. Subsequently, Xinghua is attacked but Shen Bin takes a bullet for him. In a shocking reveal, Shen Bin turns out to be Zhongyu's kidnapper.

The three sisters start work at the Xinghua Department Store. A rivalry ensues, as they compete to outshine each other. Once again, business savvy Zhongyu proves her mettle by selling all of the dead stock in the warehouse. She cleverly attracts customers with discount coupons and free gifts. Meanwhile, the department store vice-president Wang Benchu and Jide collude to take over the business. Zhongyu finds all ways and means to get close to Fengwu, but he does not reciprocate her feelings. Lu Pei is caught breaking into the Yi family house. His cousin Liu Qingfen defends Lu Pei. Despite his rich playboy image, Lu Pei actually cares deeply for his country.

A Japanese guest's attempt to steal the popular perfume's formula is thwarted by Weian and Fengwu. In a bid to flatter Jide, Benchu switches the balm's packaging from a China-made box to a Japan-made box. A furious Xinghua mistakenly blames Zhongyu for the packaging change. Meanwhile, the perfume laboratory's Master Liu is found dead.

The Yi family discover Master Liu's plan to deliver the stolen pollen along with his corpse. The three sisters suspect Jide and devise a plan to expose him. They fake an argument and pretend to sell their grandmother's fragrance formulas. Jide bites the bait and introduces Japanese businessman Kato to the sisters. The sales negotiation is thwarted by Zhongyu and Fengwu. In the encounter, Lu Pei attacks Kato, who ends up in the hospital. Eventually, Jide's evil scheme falls through. Meanwhile, Xinghua and Yingru go out for tea. Yingru panics when she bumps into a familiar face at the teahouse.

Weian advises Xinghua to stay out of politics to avoid trouble, but Xinghua feels a sense of duty to his countrymen. Zhongyu purposely trips and falls into Fengwu's arms. Servant Wangzhu spreads gossip about fellow servant Ayuan's family background, after discovering that Ayuan's sister works in the red-light district. Yingru meets up with the old acquaintance, who turns out to be Zhongling's ex-fiancé, Wang Jianchi.

After Benchu is fired, he takes revenge by hiring an arsonist to set the department store on fire. Shen Bin prevents the tragedy and earns the trust of Xinghua. Meanwhile, Xinghua blames Zhongling because she was too lenient with Benchu previously. Having sacrificed so much for the family, Zhongling feels aggrieved. During a family trip on Qingming Festival eve, Zhongyu goes missing at the hunting grounds. Fengwu finally locates Zhongyu, but realises that she has a compass. Angered by Zhongyu's attention-seeking disappearing act, Fengwu throws her out of the car. Zhongyu ends up riding a donkey home.

Zhongyu is mad at Fengwu for ditching her on the way home. Zhongling tells Zhongyu that Fengwu was secretly following her to ensure her safety. Zhongling and Jianchi catch up over tea when Weian bumps into them at the teahouse. An explosive argument erupts between the couple, Zhongling accuses Weian of murder as well as forcing marriage on her. Later, Weian realises that Zhongling's accusations are true - his father is responsible for the heinous acts. Hence, Weian does not bother explaining to Zhongling and the couple drifts further apart. Meanwhile, Xinghua decides to hold a grand engagement ceremony for Zhongxiu and Fengwu.

Ayuan is worried about her father's illness, Zhongjie prepares a surprise to cheer her up. Xinghua shares his plans with Zhongling, he wants to matchmake Zhongyu and Shen Bin. Zhongling feels resentful towards her father for favouring her sisters. Xinghua Department Store prepares to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival. However, on the day of the festival, the new department store Xuri's opening steals its thunder. Customers flock to Xuri, which is located across Xinghua. After an unpleasant encounter with Zhongxiu, Lu Pei's mother takes a dislike for her and forbids Lu Pei from meeting Zhongxiu. Meanwhile, Fengwu is about to be engaged to Zhongxiu. Zhongyu refuses to let Fengwu out of a hotel room until he promises not to fight for the Yi family's inheritance. Fengwu can't be bothered to deal with the unreasonable Zhongyu.

After spending the night together at the hotel, Zhongyu comes to her senses and releases Fengwu. The Tang and Yi families meet to discuss the engagement ceremony. Four of Zhongxiu's ex-boyfriends turn up unannounced and cause a stir. Zhongxiu accuses Zhongyu of scheming to ruin her engagement with Fengwu. During the pair's heated confrontation, Zhongxiu blurts out that Zhongyu almost got her killed in the past. As a result, Zhongyu is chased out of the house. Zhongyu vows to take revenge on the Yi family. Servant Ayuan follows Zhongyu to take care of her. After the debacle, Fengwu breaks off the engagement with Zhongxiu.

The Yi family enterprise suffers great losses when its first cargo ship, Hope, sinks. Needless to say, Xinghua is devastated. Shuyu becomes a shareholder of the department store competitor, Xuri. Shuye enlists Zhongyu in his scheme to destroy Xinghua Department Store. Meanwhile, Weian organises a Miss Shanghai beauty contest to raise funds for charity. The Yi family members rally around to support the meaningful cause.

Upon hearing news of the beauty contest, Zhongyu seeks out a candidate. She nominates Afeng, Ayuan's sister, for the contest. Just as Benchu locks away the crew member behind the ship's mishap, Shen Bin turns up and they end up fighting. Amidst the chaos, the culprit is taken away by a mysterious man. On the day of the beauty contest, Zhongxiu's ex-boyfriend Frank causes a ruckus. He threatens Zhongxiu with a gun and demands that she return to America with him. Lu Pei comes to Zhongxiu's rescue. During the scuffle, Qingfen is accidentally injured and Zhongjie dresses her wound. The sight of Zhongjie caring for Qingfen upsets Ayuan.

Encouraged by Afeng and Zhongyu, Ayuan takes part in the contest. With her beauty and sweet vocals, she wins the hearts of the audiences, in particular, the Sichuan warlord Zhao Haitang. Zhongjie sees Ayuan in a different light and falls for her. Before the voting commences, the families of the shipwreck victims barge into the hall. To defuse the situation and clear the Yi family name, Zhongyu exposes Benchu as the perpetrator of the accident. Benchu gets arrested. Ayuan beats Zhongxiu in the beauty contest. After Ayuan wins the crown, Weian gifts her to the warlord Haitang.

The Yi siblings join forces to rescue Ayuan from Haitang. After successfully saving Ayuan, they put her up in the Yi family home. Meanwhile, Shen Bin is particularly attentive to Zhongyu. Shen Bin's actions do not go unnoticed - Fengwu is upset and Xinghua encourages Shen Bin to chase Zhongyu. Yingru notices that Zhongling resembles Luo Rumei. Yingru drops hints that Zhongling and Rumei may have a special relationship, prompting Zhongxiu to hire a private investigator to find out the truth. Zhongyu is excited to be invited to the movies by Fengwu. Zhongling accompanies Zhongyu to shop for a new dress for the date. Along the way, they spot Weian acting intimately with Jiyu.

Xinghua drops hints that his ideal son-in-law is Shen Bin. As such, Fengwu decides to give Zhongyu up, even though it pains him. However, Fengwu is unable to repress his true feelings for long. When Fengwu meets Zhongyu, he kisses her. Zhongyu paves the way to secure power at the Mid-Autumn festival board meeting. She starts to bribe the company directors. Zhongling earns the approval of Xinghua by thoughtfully improving the staff's welfare. She proves to be a strong competitor against Zhongyu. Meanwhile, Zhongling attempts to reconcile with Weian by bringing him home-cooked food. But she catches Jiyu deliberately trying to get close to Weian.

Shen Bin announces that he is courting Zhongyu. As Ayuan and Zhongjie grow closer, the Yi family elders are concerned. Zhongling falls out with Jiyu over Weian. Jiyu takes revenge by sowing discord among the Yi sisters. She accuses Zhongling of breaking up Zhongxiu's engagement and making Zhongyu take the rap for it. After hearing Jiyu's allegations, Zhongyu and Zhongxiu are enraged. They plot to embarrass Zhongling at the Mid-Autumn Festival dinner. However, Zhongyu has a change of heart. She is moved by Zhongling's advice to follow her heart, instead of her father's orders, and marry the man she loves.

At the Mid-Autumn Festival dinner, Zhongxiu reveals that Zhongling's biological mother is Rumei. She accuses Zhongling of sowing discord among the sisters, in a bid to take over the family business. An upset Zhongling airs her grievances and wants to leave home. Meanwhile, Fengwu's proposal to Zhongyu angers Xinghua. Zhongyu chooses love over power and leaves for France with Fengwu. Xinghua cancels Zhongyu's inheritance rights and appoints Zhongling to manage the department store. Zhongling and Weian finally reconcile.

Weian leads the army to defend against the Japanese invasion. A bloody battle ensues as reinforcements do not arrive. Weian is disappointed with the disorganisation of the Kuomintang. Meanwhile, Zhongyu returns from France. Something seems to be amiss as the Zhongyu and Fengwu have yet to marry. Due to the war, the family business spirals into a financial crisis. Zhongxiu and Zhongling attempt to reduce their bank loan interest, but their plans are thwarted by Jianchi. Now, Xinghua is at risk of a buyout at a low price.

Fengwu finds the bomb planted by the Japanese invaders. He saves the Yi family, changing Xinghua's opinion of him. The reason why Zhongyu broke off her engagement was over a woman, Su Yin, who is a staff member at the Chinese embassy in France. She is trying to get close to Fengwu. Shen Bin joins Changlong and buys up all the pig bristles to thwart Xinghua's business plan. However, Zhongyu foils his scheme. Zhongyu visits her grandfather's old friend, Mr Yu, to discuss raising funds to save the Xinghua Department Store.

Meanwhile, Xinghua calls for the civil war to end and for people to unite to fight the foreigners. However, his actions anger the Japanese and his family's lives are in danger. In order to save his country, Zhongjie heads to Dongbei alone. Zhongxiu politely rejects Lu Pei's proposal. Zhongyu goes to the hospital to visit Fengwu, only to find out that he has been discharged. Instead, Su Yin is waiting at the hospital for her.

Shuye and Xinghua are at odds, as Xinghua chased out Shuye's Japanese guest Yingsi Zhongyi from their home. Meanwhile, Zhongyu refuses Xinghua's request to bring forward her marriage date. Jide forces Xinghua to accept Yingsi's invitation. Xinghua attends the business meeting with the Japanese alone. Tragedy unfolds and Xinghua is killed.

Before the couple's nuptials, Su Yin provokes Zhongyu on purpose. Zhongyu retaliates and rebukes Su Yun. On the wedding day, Su Yin's illicit affair with the deputy foreign minister is exposed. The diplomat's wife received photos of Su Yin's tryst with her husband. She gives Su Yin a tight slap.

When Jide's mother Fan Yanqiu finds out, she gives Wang Zhu a severe scolding. The Yi sisters begin to exact their revenge. Fortunately, she escapes the Japanese patrol officers with the help of Lu Pei. Zhongyu grooms Ayuan into a popular star. At a party where Ayuan is singing, Haitang makes a scene and declares he will take her as his concubine. Fortunately, Weian arrives at the party to take Haitang in hand.

Much to the Yi family's relief, Zhongjie returns home from Dongbei alive. Details of the Kuomintang's high-level military conference are leaked. This information allows the Japanese army to bomb Fengwu's car on its way from Nanjing to Shanghai. Fortunately, Fengwu survives the attack. With Jianchi's help, Fengwu narrows down the suspect who leaked the military intelligence - deputy foreign minister Fu Yanchang. Shen Bin professes his love to Zhongyu, only to be rejected. Zhongyu visits the injured Fengwu, but she leaves in a huff after seeing Su Yin.

Meanwhile, the Kuomintang is losing the fight against the Japanese. Weian is frustrated over the government's incompetence and corruption. A Japanese plane bombs Xinghua Department Store by accident, destroying the premise and injuring hundreds of refugees. Fengwu rescues Zhongyu from the rubble, before saving others. Shen Bin arrives at the scene later, but Zhongyu mistakes him for her saviour. She finally agrees to marry Shen Bin.

As the Kuomintang troops begin to retreat, Chiang Kai Shek orders the troops to hold the fort. Weian is incensed and refuses to carry out the order. After Xinghua Department Store is destroyed, Zhongling is busy making a living for the family. Zhongyu finds gold, jewellery and weapons, which Xinghua had buried in their backyard. She proposes to rebuild Xinghua with these valuables, so they can support the refugees long-term. The Yi family agree with her idea. Meanwhile, Fengwu helps a priest to build a safe haven for the refugees. Zhongyu witnesses Fengwu's altruistic act and is deeply moved.

Fengwu declares that he will only marry Zhongyu. Meanwhile, the Kuomintang's orders lead to heavy losses and the fall of Shanghai. Soldiers seek refuge at the safe zone, giving the Japanese troops the licence to enter the shelter. As a result, civilians were nearly shot. Jianchi is injured, as a bomb rips through Japanese victory parade. On account of how Jianchi carried out an assassination for his country, Yingru hides him to help him avoid capture. Zhongjie gets engaged to Qingfen, breaking Ayuan's heart.

Upon hearing about the Nanjing Massacre, Lu Pei leaves without saying goodbye. Lu Pei's departure worries Zhongxiu. Yingsi returns to Shanghai, where he rounds up businessmen and scholars to form the Shanghai Citizens Association. It's part of his plan to control Shanghai by advocating Japanese militarism. However, Lu Pei launches an assassination operation to get rid of key association members. Meanwhile, Jianchi secretly meets up with a military spy at the Yi family home. When Yingru finds out, she's furious and chases Jianchi out of their home.

Before leaving in a huff, Shen Bin swears to Ayuan that one day he'll become the owner of the Yi mansion. Later, Weian brings Jiyu and her mother Yanqiu back from Hong Kong.

After Weian returns to Shanghai, Zhongling notices a drastic change in his temperament. Now, he even rubs shoulders with the Japanese-controlled municipal government of Shanghai. Meanwhile, Zhongyu and Fengwu work together to maintain order and security in the safe zone. Xinghua Department Store's reopening ceremony is held on Zhongling's birthday. However, Zhongling waits for Weian in vain. At the ceremony, Zhongxiu and Lu Pei reconcile, and Shen Bin brings up his wish to marry Zhongyu as soon as possible. The next day, Zhongling is shattered by her husband's betrayal after witnessing Jiyu leave his room.

Meanwhile, Zhongyu's cousin, Zhou Shiying, visits Shanghai. He is infatuated with Zhongling.

Shiying's courting makes Zhongling uncomfortable. Jianchi helps her ward off Shiying's romantic advances. But Jianchi isn't interested in Zhongling, he has fallen for Yingru. When Jianchi expresses his love for Yingru, Zhongxiu protests strongly. On the surface, Weian colludes with the Japanese. But he is secretly gathering counter-intelligence against the Japanese. After Zhongling finds out the truth, the couple reconciles. Meanwhile, Fengwu is seriously injured while stopping the Japanese from setting up sentries. Zhongyu is worried about Fengwu.

Zhongyu reveals her true feelings for Fengwu, and the lovers finally get together. Even though Yingru has feelings for Jianchi, she tears up his love letters. The Japanese search Xinghua Department Store's warehouse, after receiving a tip-off from Su Yin. She accuses the Yi's charity sale as a front to raise funds for war efforts. However, the Japanese do not find anything incriminating. The Japanese apologises to the Yis and punish Su Yin publicly. Meanwhile, Jianchi assassinates Director Fu. Lu Pei bids Zhongxiu farewell, as he is leaving Shanghai to join the army.

Zhongxiu is now aware of her mother's true feelings. She gives her blessings to Yingru and Jianchi and she encourages them to leave the city. Meanwhile, Qingfen and Afeng work together to destroy the New World nightclub and kill the Japanese major general, Sanpu. Unfortunately, Qingfen sacrifices her life. Full of remorse for misunderstanding Qingfen, Zhongjie heads to the anti-Japanese resistance base. Fengwu incurs the wrath of the Japanese after releasing over 100 overseas Chinese. He gets sent to a concentration camp. Meanwhile, the Japanese confiscate the Yi's properties. Shen Bin buys over the Yi family home and drives the three sisters out.

The Yi family members move on to new chapters in their lives. Weian and Zhongling settle in Beijing and adopt a pair of orphans. Yingru and Jianchi emigrate to Taiwan. Fengwu reunites with Zhongyu. He works for the International Court of Justice. Ayuan is determined to look for Zhongjie. Meanwhile, Zhongxiu learns that Lu Pei died three years ago. She stays in Shanghai to run the family business. Xinghua Department Store finally flourishes again.
