That Chile and the world can enjoy species like the abalone is thanks to a Chilean marine biologist. Juan Carlos Castilla's unprecedented studies laid the foundations for what we know today as the "species ban", a discovery that was made by declaring a specific area of the ocean a marine reserve and waiting to see how the regeneration of that area would not only benefit it, but also produce a cascade effect. This discovery revolutionized marine conservationism as we know it.
