17-year-old Justine is having the worst year of her life, when she finds an unlikely lifeline in her disabled therapist.

After a violent altercation, a runaway youth goes on the lam with a charming beach dweller offering an easy way out, but once they skip town, she quickly realizes that the harrowing past she's running from is one she may never escape.

It's 1947 in post-war Southern California and big-band swing music is all the rage. Best friends, Gifford Williams and Nolan Edwards dream of expanding their combo, The Jammin' Pajama Men, into a big swing band at their school, Castle High. They convince one of their teachers, Herb Miller, to lead them, recruit a few more talented guys and gals, and form the band, The Knights of Swing. Gifford and Nolan's dream is that The Knights of Swing will become so good by the end of the school year they'll win the California Battle of the Bands. When the 3B's, a girls' vocal trio, begin singing with them, they're well on their way. But they begin encountering obstacles and racially motivated road blocks when a parent, Melba Barlutski, for her own seemingly irrational reasons, tries to sabotage them. However, Lou Arthur, principal of the Castle and a former jazz pianist, loves the band and all that it does for the kids, and puts his job on the line, sometimes using his Arthurian powers as 'King Arthur' to keep Mrs. Barlutski from realizing her nefarious objectives. She is relentless though, driven by her own personal demons, and enlists other parents who create new problems every time Gifford and Nolan and the band solve an old one. But Gifford and Nolan and The Knights of Swing are relentless, too. They refuse to give up and, against overwhelming odds, ultimately qualify to compete in the California Battle of the Bands. Living their dream is now within reach but their hopes are rocked by something they never saw coming. Their dream, what they've worked for all year, now seems crushed. Beyond reach. Hopeless. But is it?

Scott Jordan (Roddy McDowall) and his Uncle Bill (Damian O'Flynn) take time from their own ranch chores to welcome home Martha Baxter (Fay Baker and her Daughter Cindy (Lyn Thomas), gone from their ranch two years. Sheriff Gilbert (Kirby Grant) gives Cindy her late father's mare, "Lady." Bill's son Daniel (Rand Brooks), who had run away from his dad's ranch, returns with his friend Roy (Gordon Jones), and several wild horses. When Daniel threatens to kill the wild stallion, Midninght, Scott buys him for $30. With patience Scott succeeds in taming Midnight. Cindy becomes interest with Daniel, but when her mother proves he is lazy, the girl is angry at Scott, thinking he has been party to the expose. When the sheriff becomes suspicious of Roy and the brand on Daniel's horses, the latter has Roy steal Midnight to get rid of him. The stallion tramples Roy to death when the latter attack him, and Scott rides away on Midnight to prevent Bill from shooting the animal. Scott hides his horse, and with Cindy's aid dresses Midnight's wounds. The sheriff convinces Bill that Roy attacked Midnight first. The horse beats off a mountain lion, and Bill wins back Scott's friendship when he shots the lion as it threatens Scott. The sheriff informs Scott that Daniel's horses were stolen from horse-traders who were shot. Scott tells this to Daniel, who knocks out Scott and plans to kill the sheriff.

A Vermont town in the 1950's hires a new minister based on his war record and capable presentation, but then are shocked when he shows up and is a black man. Things go completely wrong for the minister when he becomes accused of the murder of a young woman he had given shelter.

Three unconnected regions, three introverted women, three stories of discovery shaped by three different geographies, societies and climates of the same fragmented country.
