Summary Don Gilbert Andrada and his wife Doña Clara Andrada always wanted children, but conceiving would prove fatal to Doña Clara because of her heart problem. One stormy night, a mysterious woman gives two baby girls to Don Gilbert in a relief operation. He names them Maureen and Mercedita and arranges the papers so the girls would be their legal daughters. But Doña Clara cannot accept the children, saying they aren't hers. She gets pregnant by Don Gilbert and refuses when he tries to get her to abort. She actually survives the pregnancy and the birth of a daughter, Gladys. Gladys grows up envying Maureen and Mercedita because of their father's attention, and when she torments them, Doña Clara encourages her to maltreat them even more, which she eagerly does when she finds out that they were adopted and she's the only biological Andrada daughter.
