Lima, Peru: early 17th century. Rosa Flores' parents have promised her in marriage to a handsome young man. But the girl, who has made a vow of virginity, dedicates her efforts and attention to those most in need. Finally, she enters as a Tertiary in the order of Santo Domingo de Guzmán to be able to give herself completely to others. Her astonishing acts of mortification, penance and charity will be culminated in various miracles that will cause her to be canonized as a saint.

One summer morning, Ah Li's father throws himself into a lake and ends his life. After the funeral, Ah Li lives a solitary life until one day, his former girlfriend tells him she is getting married. Feeling abandoned, Ah Li goes home and drinks himself into a stupor. He then decides to go to a lakeside resort to forget his troubles in a change of scene. There, he finds himself at a lakeside restaurant, where he meets the manager, a young lady named Ah Fang.
