The German doctor Martina is kidnapped by a Sunnite group, back in Iraq. Her confinement becomes an ordeal of her cognitive ability and her loyalty. In the end the meaningfulness of her own existence is questioned.

Mrs. Ormsby Parr, a scheming society woman who has buried three husbands, hopes to arrange a marriage between her stepdaughter and Billy Morrow. She arranges for Billy's father to take them on a cruise to Europe. Off the coast of France, Billy learns of the scheme and makes for shore with his newfound friend, Red, an ex--taxi driver. In Paris they encounter artist Gaston Picard, who is betrothed to the Countess Stoll but nevertheless is in love with his American model, Renée Darcourt. Billy and Renée fall in love, but he comes to doubt her intentions because of her profession and his suspicion of Picard. War breaks out, and he joins the Foreign Legion. He is wounded and taken to a hospital where Renée is a nurse. Their doubts and jealousies vanish and all ends happily.

Lewis Dumont, a Northern officer in the American Civil War, works undercover behind Confederate lines in an attempt to lead Southern forces away from an area in which a Northern attack is planned. But Dumont falls in love with a Southern girl and when she proves useful to his plan, his conscience begins to tear at him.

Raymond Lovell plays a Dutch farmer. A strong opponent of the occupying German regime, Lovell does his patriotic duty by hiding resistance leaders in his barn. His activities are threatened by his own son, an avaricious type who threatens to notify the German authorities if Lovell doesn't fork over the resistance members' valuables. While most of the cast is English, But Not in Vain is convincingly Dutch in atmosphere and point of view. The film also incorporates authentic wartime footage filmed by members of the Dutch resistance. The Dutch version of the film was the first Dutch production of a feature film after the war.
