Summary Em was diagnosed with a rare brain disorder at birth. The doctors said she would most likely be put in an institution for the rest of her life. However, she was able to graduate from high school and worked in a sheltered workshop. After a harsh episode with an abusive work supervisor, Em decided to start her own business, a coffee shop in the small town of Independence, Iowa.
