Mid 90's. Afghan war veteran Boris Likhachev is, at first glance, the most ordinary Russian, peacefully leading a quiet family life on the outskirts of a regional town in which there is no crime at all. Of course, a few years ago he and his combat commander Aleksey Bystrov cleared this city of all criminal elements. After that, their paths diverged - Boris Likhachev started a family and lived a quiet life, and his commander became the mayor of the city.

THE HIGHEST STEP IN THE WORLD tells the story of the post-war U.S. Air Force pre-astronauts, who risked their lives to be the first men into space years before NASA existed. And if that's not enough, we'll meet the only man to break the sound barrier by free-falling from the edge of space.
