Hard Time

June - September 1944. D-Day, June 6, 1944. In early morning hours, infantry carriers, including one hundred and ten ships of the Royal Canadian Navy, cross to the coast of France while Allied air forces pound enemy positions from the air.

What is the scariest thing that ever happened to you as a child? Nina Milligan explores how a genocide that happened twenty years ago continues to affect children in Rwanda today. Child survivors are now young adults who were witness to horrific violence; they saw parents murdered or raped and their schools destroyed. In the aftermath, these young people had little access to food, shelter or education. Milligan shares stories of young people rebuilding their lives and interviews President Paul Kagame himself about a country in the process of change.

The documentary climaxes in the skies over Oslo, Norway as two Messerschmitt Bf110's attack a RAF Sunderland Flying Boat. Nine airmen perish and one miraculously survives. The story is told through the eyes of Bill Young, the nephew Cliff would never know.

Slovak photographer Magdalena Robinson entered the TV set to share her poignant testimony with us. In time of first Slovak state /1939-1945/ she lost her parents and survived Auschwitz. The film is a response to the enduring tendency within Slovak society to justify the country's wartime past and to rehabilitate the exponents of fascism.
