Gonarezhou: The Movie

A young man dealing with the recent loss of his mom is transported to a magical realm via an old 8mm film projector to learn one last lesson from his mother.

An old count, Walter Gold, tells his grandson a story of his life. Over 60 years ago, while on a horse walk, Young Walter met a creature that would change his life forever since.

A timid young man named Bai is regularly bullied from childhood, ever since he began wearing an eye patch after a minor accident. Unable to make and keep any real connections, he finds himself drawn to a local lake where he begins tossing in coins and talking directly to it. Not long after, he discovers a mysterious girl at the lake, wearing a white gown and headdress reminiscent of the past--where she claims she's from. After befriending Bai and gaining his trust, she sets him out to complete three different tasks in order to set her free from the curse binding her to the lake. While Bai seeks to complete the three tasks, his colleagues take note of his change in behavior and spy on him, eventually discovering his secret rendezvous with the mysterious girl. Upon discovering her identity at the local library's historical section, they decide to warn Bai that his life is in grave danger. However, Bai rejects their words and runs away, only to have his old friend, Kaz, confirm that the stories are indeed true. Forced with a conflict between what he feels for the girl Wu in his heart and what this new information in his mind suggests, Bai must now decide whether or not to trust and assist Wu, or say goodbye walk away. His colleagues, however, prompted by the local museum director, seek to end Wu's life forever. Will Bai be able to overcome his fears and weaknesses and make the right choice in time?
