A 'semi-invisible community' of 270,000 foreign domestic workers mainly from the Philippines and Indonesia, but also Thailand, Sri Linka, and Nepal, supports the lifestyles of Hong Kong's 7.13 million people. Some women fulfill their hopes for a better life, but others are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse by their home government, the Hong Kong government, employment agencies, and their employers. Seyoung Lee has investigated the phenomenon of gendered migration in the 21st century, researched the different aspects of working as a domestic worker in Hong Kong and recorded the presence and empowerment of the city's foreign domestic workers by making a documentary based on the activism of domestic worker unions and organizations in Hong Kong.
