A strange man is trapped in a room while creating strange works of art. At first tormented by an unknown figure, Subject 8477447 escapes his captor and tries to make his way back home. The world appears to be in a perpetual apocalyptic state, and he is apparently in Limbo. Upon finding his home and entering, he is shocked to discover he is back where he started. Now, however, all of his creations disappear to reveal transition to the afterlife. His tormentor was actually God enabling his spiritual evolution. Upon achieving his spiritual evolution we hear sounds of destruction from earlier in the film, indicating a nonlinear reality. What his evolution means for humanity is he rest of the story.

Yajie, a mistress of a government official in Beijing, is in her 30s, out of shape and losing popularity. After the official was put into prison, she returned Chongqing her hometown that she left twenty years ago to start a new life. Gao Jie, a taxi driver, whose mother became a vegetable at a medical accident. He divorced and brought up his son Gao Yuan alone. Gao Jie wanted to help Gao Yuan get married and find a job after he graduated. Gao Yuan is a gay. His boyfriend is from a rich family and plans to study abroad, so does Gao Yuan. Therefore, he tried to persuade Gao Jie to support him with the money that his father saved for his job-hunting and apartment purchasing. Gao Jie picked up Yajie at the airport. They became familiar through her hiring of his taxi and fell in love with each other. Yajie was seriously ill and needed a heart bypass surgery. She desperately needed operation fees. Gao Jie faced a difficult choice, his son or his lover. At last, he chose his son. Yajie left Gao Jie. She dressed up and went to places connected with porn. Afterwards, Yajie and Gao Jie met again. Yajie told Gao Jie that she had the operation made. In a hotel, they suddenly stopped while they took off their clothes halfway. That was their last meeting. Gao Jie worked extremely hard to make money, paying for the apartment purchased for his son. Gao Yuan became a civil servant as Gao Jie wished. One day, at dawn, Gao Jie died of a sudden myocardial infarction.
