Summary Fishing partners Paul Whalen and Jim Payne are rivals for the affections of Jennie Blake, a schoolteacher from the city who came to their small town of Rocky Point to teach school. After Jim is beaten in a fight by Paul, Jennie marries Paul and Jim leaves town. Five years later he returns to town as coastal inspector, and when he learns that Jennie and Paul are still married but Paul is out of work, Jim hires him as a lighthouse keeper but sends the couple to a remote, lonely, depressing lighthouse.
