Evil Men Do

This one-hour documentary traces the rise and fall of Li Xianglan, a.k.a. Shirley Yamaguchi, deftly navigated the clash of nations to become one of Japan and China's biggest movie stars during World War II. A Manchurian born Japanese who could "pass" as Chinese, she was a propagandist's dream. She rose to fame in a series of Japanese romantic melodramas playing the Chinese girl who falls in love with a Japanese man. For a while it worked, but when Japan lost the war her cover was blown and she nearly faced a firing squad. A double life; a dangerous game. Ms Li passed away last September. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII. The documentary provides an opportunity to reflect on the lasting impact of that conflict, and how it affects the life of East Asia's most iconic super star.

Lyrical, intimate, and sometimes humorous, Souvenirs is a eulogy in film of a Veteran whose Post Traumatic Stress Disorder case is actively under review by the Veterans' Affairs office 8 years after his suicide. Ivars 'Andy' Pelecis was a man who wanted to move on. Andy survived the Vietnam War physically, but lived without recognition of his war related mental illness until the day he took his own life in 2002. After 30 years of struggling to 'survive the peace' through alcohol, and ten stays in the locked ward at hospital, Andy's case was reopened by his social workers. Mara Pelecis, Andy's daughter, seeks to reveal her dad's real story that was hidden from her as a child.

Living in the Story presents a fast romp through thirty-five years of art making by the distinguished photographic artist Patrick Ryoichi Nagatani, pioneer of the Contemporary Constructed Photographic Movement. Nagatani's innovative and prolific art deals with anxiety in the nuclear age and methods of healing and transcendence. Scott Nagatani's hauntingly beautiful music score provides the film's soundtrack.
