In 1945 the war was not over in Brazil: A death squad assassinated all the Japanese immigrants who accepted defeat.

Marie-Hélène lives in a manor but is not happy. Georges, her husband, is gentle to her but she feels stifled by the constant presence of Cécile, her intrusive mother-in-law. One day, Jacques, a friend of George's comes to visit him. He is in the company of a beautiful woman, Françoise. Marie-Hélène, who feels ill-at-ease in her new environment, gets more and more attracted to Françoise. To such an extent that the two women fall in love. The lovers run away to the city but their affair will prove short-lived.

Allan Shepherd is 'sent down' after writing an indictment of his university. He marries his sweetheart Jane, but they separate when she becomes the breadwinner.

A group of friends who have not been able to see each other for some time, take advantage of Andrés' prison leave to meet again. As the sun goes down, they will have to face a problem from the past that threatens to put them all in jail.

8 September proved to be a fateful day for the Acqui Division, part of the predominately Italian force occupying Cefalonia: it was the day the Allies concluded an armistice with Italy. Confusion now reigned between the Italian and German troops stationed on the island. The Italians longed to return peacefully to their homeland, but the Germans--now their enemies--feared the Italians might use their munitions in a hostile act. As Nazi reinforcements invaded the island, the Italian troops did something extraordinary. Following a democratic referendum involving soldiers of all ranks, rather than surrender to the Germans they elected to fight.
