On the way from Moscow to a new duty station, a young investigator Vsevolod Pashin becomes an unwitting witness to a car setup. He stands up for the injured Krasnov. And when Krasnov is found dead, he himself becomes a suspect. The case is being investigated by the homicide department of the Zavolzhsky District Department of Internal Affairs of the city of Ensk: an investigative team consisting of a senior investigator, Major Yevgeny Churilov, Captain Ilya Verkhovsky, detective Eduard Krasavchek and forensic expert Tatyana Sokolova. The forensic photographer Grigory Malinin, nicknamed Pykha, intervenes in the investigation. As a result, Seva remains in Ensk, and Pyha becomes his personal assistant.
