Doris watches her father die at the hands of her mother, and grows into adulthood resentful and suspicious. Later in life, a ruthless butler sees her as his golden ticket.
Doris marries a playboy, adopts an adult woman, and hires a drunken Irish butler, who immediately begins scheming to get his hands on her fortune, which she comes to believe is more curse than blessing.
