Ancient Rome was a hotbed of street crime. Other than a few wealthy families that lived in hilltop mansions the homes of the rich and poor were liberally mingled making everyone a likely victim of muggers or the guards who were supposed to provide protection. Some neighborhoods were notoriously unpleasant, as for their smell, but the places to really avoid were bars, barbers and brothels.
