He has plans to marry Richard to Mistress Sedley, but the Black Arrow has plans of his own, firing arrows bearing warning letters into the castle, one of which plans young Richard's escape.

Mistress Hatch persuades the guard at the door of Joanna Sedley's prison cell to hand over his dagger to aid her escape, with a promise that Lord Risingham would look kindly on his assistance. Meanwhile the gang of outlaws chain the front door of the castle shut to keep the occupants in while they release all of the cattle belonging to Sir Daniel Brackley.
