Neznayka could not choose an occupation for himself. He never completed any of the work. Finally he decided to become a poet. It turned out that this business also needs to be studied, but Neznayka did not like it. He composed several poems about the rest of the shorties, but in the end they did not like it, and he was driven away. At the end, he read the poem to his four-legged friend Bulka, who appreciated it.

Vintik and Shpuntik came up with a miracle machine that ran on sparkling water with syrup instead of gasoline. All the shorties of the Flower City gathered to look at this invention. Vintik and Shpuntik allowed all the shorties to ride in a car, except Neznayka, and so he decided to drive on his own. Sitting behind the wheel, Neznayka at first could not start the car, and then, when he succeeded, he destroyed virtually the entire city, after which the car fell off a cliff, and the main character found himself on a branch. As a punishment, Dr. Pilyulkin was going to smear him with iodine, but Neznayka promised that this would not happen again.

All the shorties of the Flower City are discussing the news: Znayka came up with a balloon. The most courageous kids will go on a journey, and preparations for the flight begin. Neznayka offends Gunka's girlfriends, Mushka and Knopochka, after which he enters the construction site. There, he first draws a face on the ball, and then spills the paint directly on Znayka. As a result, the latter demands that Neznayka be struck off the list of those flying.

Neznayka's adventures in the Green City continue. With the help of the dog Bulka Neznayka managed to find his friends, whom the caring little girls of the Green City placed in the local hospital. Neznayka went to his friends, but they didn't let him in because his friends made a fuss. In order to get to them, he disguised himself, wearing a doctor's coat and glasses, and making a false beard and mustache out of cotton wool.

Neznayka's friends reunited with him, but only Znayka was missing. During this time, Neznayka became the main inventor and traveler. He decided to tell all the shorties about this amazing flight, but Znayka appeared, as a result of which Neznayka was exposed as a liar and a braggart. First, Ponchik and Toropyzhka teased him, as a result of which they made Neznayka cry, but the little babies stood up for him. In the end, everyone went home, singing a song about a grasshopper.
