"Tonight Dance" "Shall we go out and jazz it?". From the beginning, modern dance was synonymous with jazz. Musicians and orchestras were white, therefore the black background of jazz was almost completely unknown. In Sweden, the Swedish Paramount Orchestra (1926-31) became our first real jazz orchestra.

The music that was swinging came to Sweden from the USA during the latter part of the 30s. When the 16-year-old Alice Babs sang "Swing it magistern" at the cinema in 1940, Sweden got hit by the swing fever.

In the 50s, Swedish jazz gets its international breakthrough. Visiting American and European star musicians alternated. In Stockholm, the dance and music palace Nalen became a center of power.

Kris med nya spår
"Crisis with new tracks" - Jazz but no dance. A large part of the new jazz had become art music, something you just listened to. Many musicians became unemployed. A new youth and popular culture took over; pop and rock and roll. Jazz became free but poor. In this climate, something new is born.

Jazz utan gräns
"Jazz without borders" - During the 70s, jazz opens up and combines with other forms of music, including folk music. Rock and jazz merged in fusion. There is also an increased interest in music outside the Western cultural sphere. Foreign rhythms and instruments are introduced.
