When the crew of the USS Invincible returns home, they are greeted by a Universe in chaos. Earth has been rendered uninhabitable, and the crew must make a new home in the Tau Ceti System, under the control of the surviving Starfleet Admiralty. After a lengthy investigation, the crew are taken to their new ship, the Invincible-A, and told to keep all vessels away from Earth.

Captain Pausch is called away to a meeting with the Admiralty as an unknown Klingon ship enters the no-fly zone between Tau Ceti and Earth. Commander DeCuir takes command of the Invincible-A as the crew prepares for their first confrontation with the Klingons.
