Famous ethnologists Maurice Mercier and Caroline Mercier have to travel to Africa. Before leaving via plane, they spend some family time with their daughters Sophie and Virginie. After an encounter with the police, the parents leave.
After Virginie, Sophie and their housekeeper Léontine barely survive from a robbery in their parents' mansion, they receive the devastating news that their parents' plane has crashed somewhere in Africa.
After their parents' presumed demise, Virginie and Sophie are brought into an orphanage and are separated due to their age difference. While Sophie quickly finds friends and hatches escape plans, Virginie struggles with a group of bullies.
The bullies continue to give Virginie a hard time. Luckily, Virginie finds friends in the girl Marie and the orphanage's doctor Dr. Franck. After a meeting with the head of the orphanage, Virginie and Sophie share a brief encounter.

Virginie and Sophie reunite with Léontine. She shares the news that back at home, Tudor has gone missing. But the clever dog actually started to make his long way to the orphanage to see the girls.
A new sports teacher arrives at the orphanage and gets immediately bitten by Tudor. Nevertheless, him and Virginie develop a mutual friendship. Ultimately, Virginie develops a crush on the attractive new teacher.
When Paul disappears, Virginie and Julien take a trip together to find the boy which eventually leads Virginie back home where she once again reunites with Léontine. Back at the orphanage, Sophie struggles with Virginie's bullies.
