On January 12, 2000, Jan Gabriel De Wet Kritzinger boarded a bus in Pretoria, South Africa, immediately shot and killed the bus driver and then opened fire on the passengers. Not wanting to remain on the bus with black persons, whom he did not see as fellow human beings, he fled police and remained in hiding for two years before being caught and brought to trial.

When she was brutally raped and killed, there was public outrage when the judges involved refused to classify it as a hate crime.

What began as a break-in soon spiraled into hours of torture for her and her friend who unwittingly stopped by during Sandy's ordeal. The reasons for her torture were unclear and irrational, as they seemed to convey a deep hatred for her.
