Ryo Hazuki, a high school student and martial artist in Yokosuka, Japan, watches as his father is murdered by a mysterious man named Lan Di. He decides to seek answers and avenge his father's death.
Ryo looks for Charlie, who may have knowledge of Lan Di and the Chinese underworld. Nozomi helps Ryo look for someone who can translate the letter that was sent to his father. Yamagishi attempts to give Ryo guidance.
After getting the letter translated by Gaowen's grandmother, Ryo seeks the help of Master Chen and searches for the Phoenix Mirror. Terry of the Mad Angels learns of Ryo's meddling.
With Goro's help, Ryo gets a job at the harbor to pay for his ticket to Hong Kong. During this time, Ryo makes friends with another worker named Mark, and the Mad Angels take action to stop him from interfering with their business.
Ryo arrives in Hong Kong, and his search for Lishao Tao leads him to Man Mo Temple. Along the way, he has his bag stolen by a kid named Wong, a biker named Joy takes an interest in him, and an elderly mad named Jianmin Tao offers him further insight into the philosophy behind martial arts.
Master Tao refuses to help Ryo. Still determined, Ryo seeks the wisdom of other martial artists in the hopes of learning about the four Wude and changing her mind.
After helping Fangmei air out the books from the library at Man Mo Temple, an impatient Ryo continues to search for martial artists who can teach him about the Wude. Joy and Wong assist Ryo in his search. Fangmei struggles to understand Ryo. Xiuying protects two children from thugs who are trying to hurt them, and she continues to attempt to guide Ryo from a distance.
Ryo uses Chawan Signs in an attempt to find Yuanda Zhu, and he searches for someone who can teach him the final Wude. Along the way he deals with increasing interference from the Yellow Heads, and he forms an uneasy alliance with Ren.
After saving Ryo from Dou Niu, Xiuying agrees to help him so he doesn't go down the same path as her brother. Ryo and Ren search for a way into the Yellow Head Building, where Yuanda Zhu is being held.
Ryo has a showdown with Lan Di and Dou Niu on the roof of the Yellow Head Building. Later, Ryo says goodbye to the friends he has made in Hong Kong and sets out for Bailu Village in order to further pursue the truth of his father's death. Along the way, he meets Shenhua.
