Autumn 1938. Igor and Margarita Petrovs spend their holidays in a small resort town. Both are happy, both love each other. But suddenly Igor announces that he has to go to the unit for a few weeks.
As soon as Petrov leaves the buyer's house, two thieves follow him. They track him down and demand the money, a fight ensues, as a result of which Igor kills both attackers. But he does not manage to run far, Petrov is arrested.
Ash and Rita settle down in a new place. Petrov and the Catalan are preparing to escape, but warden does not take his eyes off the ward and begins to suspect something.
While Ash comprehends the basics of military science, the warden introduces Petrov to the world of thieves. He decides not to hand over Petrov to the thieves.
The news of the war finds Rita and Ashes in different cities, and they do not even have time to say goodbye. Rita and her students are in Leningrad, and Ash is immediately taken to the front.
Petrov and his gang make a daring attack on the Pervomaysky mine, taking the gold ready for shipment. All the prospectors are killed, only one of the workers manages to run to the forest.
Ashes are returning home. There Rita is already waiting for him, who announces that she is pregnant. The Catalan and Ilshat bring a major of the border troops to the mine.
Kupriyanov holds a meeting in the military unit, informing that Ash can identify a thief named Ragged, and offers to carry out the identification at the upcoming officers' evening.
Since all the gold from the mines is ordered to be delivered to the military unit, Petrov goes there with the gold the next day. He himself approaches Ash and Kupriyanov.
Ash meets with thieves, offering to get the common fund and gold, which was stolen from the mines. In confirmation of his words, he shows the thieves a butterfly brooch that Sonya gave him.
