Exploring Antarctica's Active Volcano Mt. Erebus: Antarctic Extremes
Mount Erebus is the world's southern most active volcano and is one of only eight in the world that has a lava lake. The volcano exists on a rift where the continent of Antarctic is spreading allowing magma to rise to the surface. Steam from the volcano freezes near the rim creating ice fumeroles that host living bacteria.
