They call us tinkers. The children were taken from them. The authorities wanted to sterilize them. Their noses and heads were measured to determine if they belonged to an inferior breed. Families were mapped and registered. It happened in Sweden in the middle of World War II and continued right up until the mid-60s. Thousands of Swedes were persecuted, simply because the authorities labeled them as "tinker".

On the night of April 24, 1992, 14-year-old Daniel Sigström suffocated to death in an epileptic fit in his foster home. The boy was then left without the supervision he needed due to his illness. Daniel's death marked the end of nearly three years in a series of foster homes. Mother Marianne was deprived of all custody and Daniel therefore forcibly taken into care by Gottsunda municipality. Tomorrow, Monday 20 March, an unusual trial will begin in Uppsala district court: Marianne has sued the municipality for having caused her son's death and is demanding damages in the millions.

Gellert Tamas has traveled around the Kingdom of Haider to find the answer.
