Members of a military family meet in the summer of 1939 in their family villa at the shore of Lake Balaton. The premonition of war is already being felt, and there is already a feud in the family over Adolf Hitler's perception. After the fight with his brother the younger one heads to Berlin to meet one of his former classmates, whose life is in danger now, because he is Jewish.

Sándor and his best friend are both heading to Berlin, but on separate paths, as his friend signed up for a secret mission against the Nazis. His journey is challenging and he is constantly monitored by the Gestapo and captured before reaches his goal. Sándor and some of his other friends visit their former classmate but the Gestapo also appear here. Now the two friends, caught in different places, await their fate in a common cell.

To free the youngsters, their former teacher arrives, who is more powerful than anyone would think, as he is actually a Nazi officer. Of course he doesn't do this without interest, as he is in love with one of his students, who is in love with one of her former classmates, who is now imprisoned. To sideline his rival, the professor carries out his death sentence. Meanwhile, the resistance arranges for the release of another prisoner in exchange for hiding certain secrets.

Years pass, Nazi Germany is at war with all of Europe. People must continue to live in this oppressed world, they have to face the horror of war every day. The professor already lives with his former student, who is grateful to him, not knowing who her new partner really is. Members of the resistance, some of the former students, cross the border into Hungary fraught with dangers.

Thanks for the efficiency of the Nazi machinery, members of the resistance are dwindling. Now they have received a mysterious message from a secret spot in Hungary that might leads them on the trail of their greatest enemy. The professor's behavior begins to become suspicious in the eyes of one of his former students, who shares his doubts with his fiancee's father, a known resistance fighter.

By now, almost all the resistance fighters have been to the Gestapo prison, and not many have escaped alive. The assassination attempt on Hitler ended in failure, followed by bloody reprisals. The members of the family fall victim to the Nazi machine one by one, but their sacrifice was not in vain. The last survivors still give hope to the people in oppression, and they know that war cannot last forever.
