It is December 1 and the poor 12-year-old Karen is going to a job interview at the Lindestrupgaard manor. But Karen does not get employment as a maid and therefore has to be sent away from her family and onto the neighboring farm. However, Karen's friend, the elf Rumle, has a special plan. With Rumle's help, Karen convinces the lady of the manor, Rigmor, to hire her anyway. At the same time, the sinister Lars Ravn appears at the manor and lures Karen to him with a special goblin strip that only children should know.

It is Karen's 13th birthday and she is now entering the ranks of adults and can no longer see her pixie friend Rumle. The manor's daughter Marie Louise arrives from the big city, full of modern ideas. But her father Erik has other plans and wants her to meet with the neighboring farm's Aage of Jungshoved to talk about marriage. The sinister Lars Ravn may not be so sinister after all. He offers to help Karen see Rumle again, with the help of a Christmas heart charm.

It draws up to thunder. Rasmus and Marie Louise capture the electricity from a lightning bolt to teach her father a lesson. Lars tells Karen that she needs to find a special elf book. Then the Christmas heart becomes magical and she can see Rumle again, even though she is 13 years old. Karen tricks the Forest Woman with her little ones and steals a page in the gnome's book. Rasmus and Marie Louise's lightning experiment works, but Rumle and Karen use it for their Christmas heart ritual - which has major consequences.

Karen can finally be with Rumle again. But soon accidents and strange things begin to happen at the manor. The grain in the barn sprouts, the cows' milk turns sour and the animals behave strangely. Is it the Christmas heart that is to blame for all the accidents, so that the manor runs the risk of going bankrupt? On the other hand, love begins to blossom between Karen's older brother Rasmus and Marie Louise, even though she may be engaged to Aage.

The maid Fie accuses Karen and Rasmus of practicing black magic and being to blame for the accidents at the manor. But Marie Louise comes to their rescue, so Fie is fired for spreading untruths. Karen and Rumle go to the Forest Woman to repair the Christmas heart so they can lift the curse and save the manor. But it is not as easy as they had hoped.

Aage of Jungshoved, who wants to be engaged to Marie Louise, comes to visit. Everything must be perfect, as Aage must not know anything about the mysterious accidents at the manor. Karen and Rumle bake magical cakes to tease Aage, but no matter what Karen does, it doesn't help, because Aage just falls even more in love with Marie Louise and decides that the wedding must take place already before Christmas.

Karen and Rumle try to get the electricity out of Rumle, with the help of the two little boys, but a strange cloud is now gathering over the manor. Is something bad coming? Ilter, a strange boy of Karen's age, says he wants to help her, but why? Rasmus and Marie Louise agree that they will run away together.

The forest woman says that the thief who stole the Christmas heart from her is the key to making it all right again. Karen thinks the thief is Lars and gets Ilter to spy on him. The manor must distribute the annual Christmas basket of food to the village. But no one must know anything about how bad things are and that the stocks are about to be empty. Erik brings a surprising message to the village.

Karen feels watched all the time, so when Ilter is suddenly intent on seeing her elf friend, she becomes suspicious. Marie Louise is waiting for Rasmus so that they can travel away together. But Rasmus cannot leave his family, as they risk ending up in the poorhouse. When Rasmus does not show up, Marie Louise is disappointed and instead accepts the offer that can save the manor.

Lars and Ilter are employed at the manor. Karen is angry at Ilter, who has betrayed her and she has to be on guard so that Lars doesn't have too much time to sniff around the farm and look for Rumle. But is it too late? At the same time, everyone is looking for the two boys, Gotfred and Johannes, who have disappeared.

Big uproar. The king comes to visit and spends the night at the manor. Karen discovers that Lars knows where Rumle lives. They must be careful. The king is impressed by Rasmus' heroic deed and invites him to lunch with the nobles. Rasmus has never tried anything so fine and classy before and when Aage realizes that there is something between Rasmus and Marie Louise, he goes to him. Lars and Ilter are still trying to find the entrance to the elf loft, maybe the two youngest boys are not as careful?

The king appoints Erik a knight of Dannebrog and falls in love with Karen's cookies. Karen makes Rasmus look after the Christmas heart and advises him to tell Marie Louise that he loves her before she gets married. But suddenly all servicemen are called to muster. Lars claims that his Christmas heart ornament has been stolen, but Karen tries to prove that he is lying and is a wanted fraudster. The whole village gathers in the church and anxiously awaits the bride, but where will she go?

Lars only needs the goblin strap to get hold of Rumle and suspects Ilter of helping Karen. Aage has been made fun of, but is now even more keen on the wedding with Marie Louise, to save his dignity. Gotfred is worried about his sister, who has disappeared, and there is even greater confusion when Marie Louise's horse suddenly appears, but then Karen makes an important discovery in the manor's attic.

Aage wants the bride price back, now that Marie Louise is still missing, but it is not so easy to pay.

Lars has kidnapped Rumle and Rasmus goes to the big city to find Marie Louise.

Karen and Ilter seek out the forest woman in the hope of getting the answer to how to break the curse. First they have to save Rumle and get him back home, but where do they start? Aage wants to give Lindestrupgaard to the king as a Christmas present to settle the shards and restore his status. Marie Louise is nervous when she wakes up and Rasmus has disappeared from the boarding house. Lars and Gyda are now on their way to the big city with Rumle, so how can Karen manage to free him?

There is a departure at 18:00, so Karen and Ilter have to come up with a rescue operation, quickly.

The forest woman tells Karen and Ilter how to lift the curse, but they have broken ancient goblin rules and it comes at a very high price.

Marie Louise and Rasmus' relationship is closer than ever, but Erik thinks it is now time for everyone to return to their usual roles. Erik asks Karl to put his son in his place, but Karl advises Rasmus to do something completely different. And Lars is by no means finished with Rumle.

Erik finally realizes who helped the family when everyone else turned their backs on them and Rigmor decides to do something that will backfire on both families.
