1944. The fighter plane regiment of commander Aleksandr Romanov is being transferred to Anapa to strengthen air units in the upcoming offensive on Crimea. During the air battle, Aleksandr manages to capture a valuable trophy - a newly modified German fighter. The enemy plane is sent to one of the design bureaus near Moscow, where work is underway on the new Soviet fighter, Yak-9U. By a fateful coincidence, Romanov himself soon ends up in the design bureau. Working on a new machine with a team of engineers and test pilots, Romanov lives with the dream of returning to the skies. Fighting against both overt and clandestine enemies, Ivan and Svetlana begin to experience a shift in their professional relationship, which grows into real love, possible only in the face of certain death. Meanwhile, Mirsky is holding his own investigation aiming at exposing a spy organization that has been operating in Kiev since the late thirties, but his search leads him unexpectedly to a secret conspiratorial group directly connected to his and Rokotov's pasts..
