Fritzi and Sophie are really proud. The tree house is finished. It was quite an adventure scavenging for the planks in that old, abandoned building. Along the way, the friends even met Rocco, the coolest break dancer at school. Now, nothing can stop the best tree house summer ever. Or can it? Kati, Sophie's mother, is being interrogated by the Stasi, the East German secret police, just because she took part in an environmental protest.

Fritzi and Sophie are not thrilled. In the middle of the holidays, Kati decides to travel to Hungary with only Sophie. Even Sputnik, Sophie's beloved dog, has to stay behind with Fritzi in Leipzig. The only good news for Sophie: Rocco and his older brother Ecki are coming too. Once they're in Hungary, Kati confesses her secret plan to Sophie: she wants to leave East Germany and escape to the West. But first, they have to make it across the border.

Fritzi and Sophie miss each other terribly. One night, Kati, Sophie, Rocco, and Ecki try to escape from a campsite in Hungary and cross the border to the West. They search for a way through the tightly guarded border fence, but then everything takes an unexpected turn. Back in Leipzig, on the first day of school, Fritzi realizes that Sophie won't be coming back-and she makes a risky plan. At the very least, she's going to bring Sputnik to her friend.

Fritzi and Sophie don't lose heart. Fritzi is determined to bring Sputnik to Hungary. Along the way, she spends time with Bela from her class, who is fighting for freedom in East Germany. But she gets into trouble at school and is even pursued by the secret police. Meanwhile, Sophie and Kati wait anxiously at the campsite, unsure of what will happen next. Then, the unbelievable happens.

Fritzi and Sophie are now separated by the border between East and West Germany. When a border officer visits her class, Fritzi starts to question the truths about her country. Meanwhile, Sophie finds that the West isn't as wonderful as she'd imagined. But at least she reunites with Rocco, who made it through the escape safely. Only, Rocco acts as if he doesn't know her. He's now calling himself Ricky from New York.

Fritzi and Sophie refuse to give up. Fritzi and Bela hatch a dangerous plan to run away during the class trip-with Sputnik-in hopes of reaching the West. Bela jumps in to help, but things quickly get more complicated than they'd expected. Meanwhile, Sophie is excited that her mother has finally found a job and is planning a trip to Paris.

Fritzi and Sophie find allies. In Leipzig, more and more people are marching for freedom, and Fritzi joins the protests. But her father, who comes looking for her, is arrested. Meanwhile, Sophie and her classmate Jessie make sure their class learns about the demonstrations happening in East Germany.

Fritzi and Sophie make it happen. Fritzi persuades her mother to join her at the next protest, even though there's a risk they could be attacked by the police. Meanwhile, Sophie and Ecki give a presentation to their class about the Peaceful Revolution in East Germany-and even Rocco shows up. But will the border really open, or is it just a rumor?
