In 1912, 13-year-old Frederik became crown prince. He lives an isolated life and has a difficult relationship with the king, Christian X, who is a dominant father and a traditional man. But in society, traditions are changing and the burgeoning democracy means that the politicians will take over the power and privileges the king has. The battle between the king and the politicians culminates in 1920, when the monarchy is thrown into one of the greatest crises of recent times. A crisis that the Crown Prince is also witnessing.

In the fateful year 1940, the Germans occupy Denmark and now the Danish royal house is again given a central role, as together with the politicians have to decide what is best for the country: Cooperation or resistance. Crown Prince Frederik is 41 years old and still has a difficult relationship with his father, the old King Christian X, who keeps his son out of the royal court. But as the king is hospitalized following a violent riding accident, the Crown Prince is deployed very much against his father's will as a reigning deputy during one of the most critical moments of the war.

At the beginning of 1920, the world is full of optimism after the end of the First World War. The young crown prince also enjoys life and not least the work in the navy. But a crown prince's most important task is to marry and produce an heir to the throne. It turns out to be harder than expected and the years go by. When, at 35, he finally meets love, the country erupts in enthusiasm and even the old, dominant king falls for his new daughter-in-law. But soon, heavy times await, as Hitler in the 1930s massively upsets and the world is once again on the brink of a world war.

In 1947, 48-year-old Crown Prince Frederik was proclaimed King of Denmark. The new royal couple puts a new and more open style to the door than the king's father Christian X. But soon the new king faces a difficult choice as he has to help decide whether his eldest daughter, Princess Margrethe, will ever inherit the throne. For without sons, the throne passes on to his brother, Prince Knud, and his sons. It does, however, require a change of law and what do the Danes say to that?
