At the time of the Airbus A380 launch Boeing leaked news of its Sonic Cruiser design. Boeing was looking past the hub and spoke airline model to the new point to point model with a near mach one airliner. But there were some issues such as the plane flying so fast it arrived before the destination airport opened.

The Other American Concorde SST no one remembers - Lockheed L-2000
There were two finalist in the United States competition for a supersonic transport to surpass the Concorde. Ultimately the selection committee chose the Boeing 2707 because it had more edgy technology over the Lockheed L-2000 which was deemed to safe and simple. Ironically, Boeing eventually abandoned the features that had won it the contract and failed to produce a flying prototype before funding was pulled.

Certainly the United States wouldn't build a new military airplane without a competitive alternative. Even the super secret SR-71 had a competitor, the Convair Kingfish. Initially Convair's plan was a air launched ramjet launched form a B-58 Hustler. But it was deemed too complex. So it was already a bit behind when it proposed the Kingfish that was theoretically faster than the SR-71. But Conveir lost out to Lockheed's experience with super secret aircraft and its Skunkworks secure production facility.
