With the Articles of Confederation failing several prominent Americans, such as Alexander Hamilton, wanted a king. George Washington was even proposed as the monarch. His refusal caused some to look to Europe, to the Prince Henry, the younger brother of the king of Prussia.

Since pineapples thrive in particularly warm climates and the plants produce only two or three crops of one to three fruits, it was so scarce in Europe that prices reached $8,000 each.
