Corporal Joe Keller, from the Detroit Police Department, appears before the city council to discuss a police officer paramedic pilot program that gave him and his partner permission to function as paramedics for the previous two years. Joe and Kevin respond to a multi vehicle roll over crash and attempt to resuscitate a dead child. They are then forced to choose between saving a man that had been shot and was bleeding to death, or giving chase and capturing the man that shot him. Joe and Kevin find themselves confronting a man hallucinating on molly and attempt to take him into custody. They take a break and try to get something to eat when an apparently angry man approaches them. Joe unsnaps his gun from his holster and prepares for the worst.

A man confronts them over his wife's death that Joe and Kevin witnessed. The man's attitude quickly changes when he realizes exactly who they are and what they did the moment his pregnant wife died. Back on the beat, they chase two teenagers from a truck into the basement of a house where a brief struggle ensues. Later that night a quick stop at a gas station turns into a pivotal moment of a drug addicts life where she is forced to choose between her freedom and her children. Upon arriving on scene of a domestic call they must make a calculated decision to make entry into a house to save a woman that is about to be murdered. Their decision and the resulting death leads to their suspension from the force. An attempted traffic stop of suspected armed robbery suspects turns out to be something totally different that would change at least one person's life forever. In order to make some extra money to get his soon to be new born son's nursery ready, Kevin picks up an extra shift. He responds to a house fire where children are trapped inside, he makes entry and not everyone makes it out alive.

Joe and Kevin attempt to serve a court pick up order to take a minor with Downs Syndrome to a Planned Parenthood clinic against her will. A chain of events would take them to the U.S. Supreme Court in a fight for her baby's life. On a call with a Bible carrying schizophrenic they become aware of the trials and gifts of what schizophrenic's suffer through. A quick rock and roll impression at the school's talent contest gets one of Joe's sons in trouble. Kevin enters a window of an old woman's home to check on her and Jerry nearly kills her when he discovers her alive. A brief traffic stop with a city councilman sets a chain of events in motion that could compromise their livelihoods. A father begs Joe and Kevin to take his heroin addicted son into protective custody. They refuse and that decision would haunt Kevin for the rest of his life. A random turn down a street turns into two men looking down the barrel of a gun while two bodies lay motionless in the bed of their truck.

April, Nick's wife, is driving while reading a birthday card he left for her. She is unaware that while reading it she entered an intersection against a red light. Joe's ultimate joke would leave Kevin getting a lecture from an 8 year old about STDs. Like mother, like daughter, a vehicle pursuit would leave a naked teenage drug addict in the floor boards of a crashed car. They respond to a home and get pulled into an epic family dispute that would eventually leave one dead and one fighting for their life. Kevin leaping into the Detroit River to save a drowning child would put the entire police department in the hot seat over a moral conundrum while the U.S. attorney attempts to extradite a child killer from Canada. A burglar alarm at a Ford Model T museum gives Kevin a valuable tool to convince a self-proclaimed time travel to be transported to a mental institution. Joe and Kevin clear a fatal crash scene to help another car crash victim. But when they arrive on scene Joe would be confronted with the most painful event in his entire career to that point. An old friend gives Joe the info he has needed to possibly catch a serial child rapist. Kevin meets the love of his life for the first time, about the same time as the Supreme Court hands down a decision that would give life or deny it to an unborn child.

Joe and Kevin become partners after Jerry takes a promotion. A car crash forces Joe to perform field surgery to save a boys life. Tensions and opinions erupt when the command staff are split while discussing Joe's behaviors on the job. DNA test results confirm Joe's suspicions about who got a young girl with Down's Syndrome pregnant. A line is drawn between Joe and Kevin's views on God and religion. A massive heart attack by a police commander leaves him questioning his ability to make good command choices and he apologizes to Joe. Joe and Kevin attempt to serve an arrest warrant on a man whom they find standing on a window ledge two hundred feet above the city. Kevin's quick thinking does not earn him any points with Joe. They are asked to investigate a 'death bed' homicide tip and begin to investigate Detroit's most notorious unsolved mass murder.

A lead revisits a 1929 case and takes Joe, Kevin and Jerry to a piece of evidence that has been waiting to be discovered for nearly 90 years. A quick stop for a cup of coffee leads to a shoot out and multiple casualties. Joe gives a local 911 abuser a lecture at knife point as the man runs for his life. Joe finds himself in court again, he is unable to contain his opinion of the plaintiff's attorney, gives him a piece of his mind and walks out of court. Thinking like a child would pay off for them and lead them to an out of town runaway. Kevin tells Sgt. Bilbrey that Joe's been sleeping with his wife. A routine traffic stop gets the attention of ICE and the FBI. Jessica heats thinks up between her and Kevin in which there would be no escape. A felony stop would lead to Commander Jenkins providing Joe and Kevin with a valuable tool as the chief green lights a big project that would ultimately cost Kevin his life. Joe and Kevin run their first call, start pushing drugs on the streets and draw positive attention from senior fire department paramedics. One last call of the night might be their last as gun fire erupts.

A shooting gets the shift started. A woman was there when her sister was born and she would be there when she died. A finger print comparison comes back and will make or break Jerry's detective career. Mr. Briner and Joe have had a life long friendship that started at the edge of a river nearly four decades earlier and Joe pays it forward. A series of package bombs has the city on edge. DPD, FBI and ATF would team up to find a serial bomber but Joe and Kevin find him first. Joe, Kevin and Sgt. Bilbrey break the rules in the first month of the pilot program. A school shooting leaves two dead and confusion about who's the villain and who's the hero. The state's attorney general gets involved at the request of Joe and Kevin's political enemy.
