The rhinoceroses is most closely related to modern horses, zebras, and tapirs which some of their ancestors resembled. Some rhinoceros ancestors also resembled the hippopotamus quite closely but their relationship is much more distant.
The modern cat family is particularly diverse relative to other mammal families leading to multiple lineages filling similar roles in similar niches. Despite the complexity and a substantial gap in the fossil record their lineages and relationships are pretty well understood.
