There are many types of grasslands around the world and each of them has their own identity. Uniqueness of Hungarian grasslands is represented by the 'Hortobagy' in the largest contiguous area.
Originally The Great Humgarian Plain was an often flooded, swampy, wooded steppe over thousands of years. When the river regulations terminated the abundance of water and forests were eradicated, this area turned to a secondary grassland
Beside the fishpond system built up since the beginning of the 20th century the Hortobagy State Farm and the adjacent agricultural cooperatives founded more and more very productive waterfowl settlements.
Recent surface of Kiskunság was formed mostly by wind. In the glacial period it has blown out sand from dried up bed of Danube and has taken that from one place to another.
