Now, 57, he's an Anglican priest with a diocese based in Hay which takes in nearly a third of rural New South Wales. This year, having resigned himself to a life of "priestly bachelorhood" he remarried and now has a six month old baby. His is a fascinating story of a life of great contrasts and surprising choices.
