S1.E23 ∙ The Worst Day Ever

The authors of this documentary film follow the stories of five people in the Indonesian province of Aceh after the 2004 tsunami.

For over 40 years, Maguy has been manufacturing goat cheese in the respect of nature and animals, on an isolated plateau in the Gorges du Verdon. Retiring Soon, she must give her flock. She decides to sponsor Anne-Sophie, a young farmer wishing to establish herself. Over the seasons, the transmission process turns out to be a painful renunciation for one and a difficult learning for the other. Can we still transmit the taste for freedom?

A classical music school in the heart of troubled Port-au-Prince, Haiti, thrives despite decades of entrenched poverty and political strife. When a catastrophic earthquake completely destroys the school in 2010, a stunned and devastated faculty and student body pick up the pieces and find a way to adapt through the power of music and community. Devotion to each other and to the possibilities that the future still holds for them are expressed in the footage of children rehearsing in the rubble and in the rich musical heritage they have inherited.

Claire Bloom has performed leading and important supporting roles in numerous plays by William Shakespeare, starting while she was still in her teens. In this documentary, she discusses her experiences and performs monologues and soliloquies from 'Romeo and Juliet,' 'The Merchant of Venice,' 'As You Like It,' 'Richard III,' 'Hamlet,' and 'King Henry the Eighth,' among others. Film and television footage from her earlier performances is also featured, as is a brief clip of Sarah Bernhardt as Hamlet in a 1900 silent film version of that play.
