Summary Alcoholic,corrupt councilor Daniel Demoys annoys wife Alex when he leaves a family gathering to pull off a dirty deal with builder Henry Pulis in an alley, having first had sex with club hostess Sylvie. Next day he wakes up covered in blood with no recall of the night's events and learns that Pulis has been put into a coma. He approaches his sister, solicitor Lucy, for help but becomes a hero by throwing himself in front of one her clients, who is the target of an assassination by a drive by shooter. He takes the bullets meant for him and while recovering becomes seen as a selfless hero. Political fixer Jerry Durran suggests that as a local hero, Daniel should run for mayor and he obtains huge support. Daniel sees it as atonement but is unaware that Sylvie's ex-husband, Bevan, is investigating the assault on Pulis.
