Summary
"American Idol" - Top Two Performance - May 25, 2010
We have moved to the Nokia Theatre for part one of the finale.
Crystal gets confused by walking down the aisle but she and Lee make it to the stage.
Crystal won the coin toss and elected to go second.
Video Package: We get a montage of Lee growing up and he and his parents reminiscing.
Lee Performance #1
Song: "The Boxer," Simon & Garfunkel
Performance: This is a much more nuanced and assured performance but the dynamics are a little extreme from the beginnings and endings of phrases.
Randy: Says it's a great way to start it off. Thought it sounded nice but that he needs more energy.
Ellen: Says he was better that time and she's proud of him.
Kara: Agrees with Randy about energy but liked the personal quality.
Simon: Says this is the big one but he's expecting more passion, a kiss on the lips not on the cheek.
Video Package: We get Crystal's montage and reminiscences from her and her dad.
Crystal Performance #1
Song: "Me and Bobby McGee," Janis Joplin
Performance: She slows it down a bit and seems a bit tentative until it speeds up and she hits her zone. There a couple of rough notes but she's feeling it so it works.
Randy: Thought it started slow but by the end it got to the Crystal we know and love.
Ellen: Thinks she's really compelling and fills the room.
Kara: Loved it the first time and loved it tonight.
Simon: This brought him back to the time that they fell in love with her and now they have a competition.
Lee Performance #2 Executive Producer's Choice
Song: "Everybody Hurts," R.E.M.
Performance: This does not pick things up. It is slow, oddly tuned, and has some pitch issues. A choir does not solve this problem, especially when they raise their arms.
Randy: Thinks it was definitely better passion-wise even though it was pitchy at first.
Ellen: Agreed that he went off a few times and she didn't care about that but worried that he pulled back at the most exciting moments.
Kara:Thinks it's great that he's a storyteller but admits it wasn't a perfect vocal.
Simon: Thinks it was a brilliant choice but he did go off pitch a bit. He says he knows he's nervous but for the last performance he wants a 10 out of 10.
Crystal Performance #2 Executive producer's choice.
Song: "Black Velvet," Alannah Myles
Performance: Eek, this song. She looks nervous walking down the stairs. She has no guitar and she's trying to give it her all, but the band is really loud and she's shouting over them.
Randy: This is what he's talking about.
Ellen: Thinks it was fantastic and gives her a standing ovation.
Kara: Thinks she went for it.
Simon: Had a problem because he's heard that song so often but he thinks she took the song and she nailed it.
Lee Performance #3 First single if he wins.
Song: "Beautiful Day," U2
Performance: With a string section onstage and working without his guitar, it's a kind of a slacker version of the song. He brings nothing to it but nerves and relief.
Randy: He feels that he's not a mover and it started rough but by the middle it was good.
Ellen: Asks how he feels. He feels good. Says watching him go through the process and grow and taking in the audience's energy made her proud.
Kara: Thinks he had some good moments and some not so good one. But says he's grown the most and deserves to be here.
Simon: Felt the effort but says in his final judgement on the show for him he says this is what the show is about, helping amateurs catch a break and he likes Lee and wishes him well.
Lee gives thanks for the show and says he will be doing this for the rest of his life no matter what.
Crystal Performance #3 First single if she wins
Song: "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)," Patty Griffin
Performance: Great song that has been covered by a lot of people, a real southern gospel flavor. It's nicely stripped back with a restrained choir and a lot of passion. This is her comfort zone.
Randy: Says this is what this show is about, calls it an amazing moment by an amazing singer.
Ellen: Is thrilled with how unique she is and thinks she's so good.
Kara: Calls it an important song and is glad that her walls came down emotionally in a way she's never seen before. Calls it amazing.
She takes a moment to say thanks to Simon and wishes him well.
Simon: Thought it was by far the best performance and the song of the night. His final critique: "That was outstanding."
Her final word is that her ride has been great and she's grateful to her family and her song.
Ryan also gives thanks to Simon and promises a few surprises tomorrow night.
Original "Pop Idol" winner Will Young performs this year's exit song "Leave Right Now" live over a montage of this season's highlights.
