Summary
"American Idol" - "Hollywood Round: Part 2"- Feb. 10, 2010
It's Group Day.
Or more precisely it's picking your group night. The contestants mill around looking for simpatico singers.
We meet a few of the groups.
The Dreamers include Mary, Alex, Margo, Erin and Hope. The two girls who forced their way into the group, Erin and Hope, cause drama by showing up late to the first rehearsal. They then fight about who is in and who is out. The drama continues throughout the night. They finally get it together and start their choreography.
The Mighty Rangers consists of people who auditioned in Denver, Maddie, Danny, Mark, Tori and Kim. They're having a little trouble with choreography.
Phoenix includes Kat, Jermaine, Ben, Jeff, and Morea. Morea made it to Hollywood last year and was in a group with Danny Gokey so she's the annoying one who knows everything already. She takes them to the spot in a closet where her group rehearsed last year. Jermaine doesn't want to do harmonies and Moraiah says they have to do it.
Neapolitan is Page, Thaddeus, Jessica, and Liz. They are doing "Bad Romance."
Destiny's Wild is also doing the Gaga song and they keep being asked to move because they are too loud. This group includes Jareb, Todrick, Theri, and Siobhan. When they sidle up to Neapolitan there's some frustration.
At 2:30 a.m. Big Mike's group is done and he's in his room getting in touch with his wife who is in labor.
Others are still rehearsing like the Mighty Rangers. Half of the group thinks they're done, the other half thinks they're not ready.
The Dreamers are still fighting. Mary is being bossy even to vocal coach Michael Orland who is trying to help them.
Destiny's Wild is doing better with their vocal coach. Neapolitan is mad about having to wait for them.
Breakfast finds more people rehearsing and people seem confident after the long night.
But final rehearsals find people forgetting the words and getting last minute criticisms from the vocal coaches and each other.
Big Mike's wife is still in labor.
Destiny's Wild is getting a lot of attention and Mary is sad about the Dreamers' problems. One of which is that everything breaks down when one person forgets the words.
Just at they're called Big Mike gets the news that the baby's imminent. He's sad he isn't there but thinks God has got a plan. He coaches his wife through. It's a girl.
The first group is Faith an all girl trio with Charity, Michelle, and Ashley. They sing "Irreplaceable." They sound nice, light, girly and have good harmonies. They get a nice hand. They're all through.
Next up is Team Awesome with Big Mike. They sing "Get Ready." They're very charming and harmonious. Big Mike and Tim Urban are through. Big Mike shows his baby on his phone and he can't wait to meet her.
Next up is Neapolitan. They sing "Bad Romance" a cappella and Destiny's Wild thinks they stole this idea from them. Simon thinks they were good and worked hard. Ellen also thought it was great. One of the girls claims that no one else chose this song so they just took it. They're all through. Destiny's Wild is mad.
But they take the stage next and do a nice job, including an acrobatic flip from Todrick. They get a nice hand. Ellen thought it was really weird and Cirque du Soleil-esqe and surreal but they're all through.
The next four groups, who we didn't get introduced to by name, also all get through.
The Mighty Rangers are less lucky. Things start well for Tori and Maddie but Mark and Kim forget the words and the judges stop them. Those two make it through. Mark begs for another chance. Kara and Simon stop him. He leaves tearfully.
Phoenix is struggling with confidence and group member Kat quits unexpectedly. She claims she didn't want ot humiliate herself. Michael Orland tells them not to panic. They had no time to rehearse as four and the choreography and shaky energy prove it. They all sing well enough individually but Ben muffs a couple words and Morea forgets a bunch during her solo. Jermaine is showier but Jeff has a funky, bluesy shout going. Kara likens it more to "Survivor" than "Idol." Morea claims hardship. Simon says people leave in real life and that's not a struggle, that you have to adjust. Jermaine and Jeff are through. Morea and Ben are not.
We see several groups struggle through "Sweet Escape." One group includes Matt from Orlando, who had done time, and dramatic Amanda from Boston. Simon calls their group horrific and they're all cut.
We see a montage of folks who got cut.
A group called Middle C with Janell, another Jermaine, and Casey does a bang up job of "Closer." And the group Three Men and a Baby that includes Andrew, Katie, J.B., and an unnamed dude who must not make the final cut since they don't introduce him does nice work on "No One." All members of both groups go through.
Final group The Dreamers, the one with bossy Mary, is not happy. They sing "Dreams" and it's a hot mess, from Mary goofing the beginning, to Hope's very soft but sweet style not really meshing, to Margo's serious pitch troubles, to Alex forgetting the words. And the choreography is awful. We don't even hear Erin sing. Kara says it's like the dream died. Randy thought the backing vocals were painful. Mary, Hope, and Alex are through, Erin and Margo are not.
71 are headed to final callback including a montage of folks we met in auditions but whose groups we didn't see like Haeley and Tyler and Lloyd.
